The Thorsby surname originated somewhere near Nottinghamshire, England.  The name probably originated from a place name, such as one of the villages in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire or Yorkshire, England. People didn't use surname's until around 1100 AD. The name is Scandinavian, meaning Thor's place or village. Often people were given surnames based on where they born, such as "Frederick of Thorseby".

In the United States, the Thorsby family is rather small, maybe about 500 total. Two brothers, Thomas and Charles emigrated to the USA from England during the 1800's, settling in Michigan. Thomas moved to Montrose, MI and Charles settled in Bay City, MI.
